Year Five is the first year of the Upper Key Stage Two curriculum, which builds upon the knowledge and skills that children have previously acquired over their time here but aims to prepare them, by the end of Year Six, for life at secondary school. Even though the work in Year Five introduces the most complex aspects of the primary curriculum, our aim is to ensure that these areas are delivered within an engaging and innovative learning environment to encourage all children to fulfil their potential.

During this year, the children experience a broad and rich variety of learning contexts in which a multitude of skills are developed in areas as diverse as music, art, sport, dance and cookery. Previous examples of this have included: learning to play the ukulele and perform ensemble in a concert; learning how to manipulate clay to create their own Ancient Greek vases; participating in contemporary dance choreographed by a professional dancer; opening a pop-up café and participating in inter-school netball and cricket competitions.

As a Church of England school, Knowle has forged excellent links with the local parish church and Year Five are in the privileged position of being responsible for creating and performing the Easter Service in church for parents and members of the wider community.

Now that the children are in Upper Key Stage Two, our expectations are that they will become the excellent role models around school that we know they can be, take on extra responsibilities in readiness for Year Six and beyond whilst becoming resourceful, independent and collaborative learners.
